So, I recently started a new character with the intent to challenge myself to see how far I can get in the game by only buying Skill Books and BPOGÇÖs (CCP Seeded Items) from the market.
IGÇÖve been playing the game over 10 years and I know my way around and before even beginning I knew there were some elements of this game that would be unobtainable and IGÇÖm ok with that. Things like T2 items will be impossible without going nullsec moon mining. And obtaining certain ships such as Faction ships will only be possible through Agents I have standings with.
Rules, No purchasing or selling from the market except for CCP seeded items (Skill Books and BPOGÇÖs) No assistance from players not participating in the challenge. Trading within corporation is allowed Only new characters that follow the rules allowed within the corporation.
Story so far, Completed Career missions Have the following ships, Frig, Destroyer, Industrial (all from career missions) Created Corporation Invited new character (player) to join in on the challenge Gained LVL 2 agent status Bought and built weapon, ammo, basic defence mods, & light drones.
Long term goal, Build a medium Engineering Complex or Citadel.
IGÇÖd love to get your input from an alternative point of view. If there is something you think I havenGÇÖt thought through or If there is something I should consider within this challenge please let me know.

Its a mix of self/tribe reliance and not being influenced by years of playing.
Its easy to get ahead these days buy getting a handout or for a more relevant example, As a 2 week old character we got a scram mod drop worth 90mil. Any normal person would be able to sell that on the market and buy many cruisers + fittings even without having the true skills to fly it nor caring about the loss that is inevitable.
Having taken two weeks of grinding missions, mining for ore to finally building myself a half decent frigate it really means a lot to me and when I'm about to lose it I get a rush like i haven't felt in nearly 10 years. The hard work creates value people in EVE don't seem to care about any more. This is the true reason I'm doing this.
That and knowing what it was like for the first players of EVE Online |

I had considered this, but it becomes a slippery and uncontrollable slope

Only from wrecks that I or our corporation generates.
Eternus8lux8lucis wrote: Btw though moon goo towers might be out of your range the irony is that ninja mining in low sec using the syphons might actually get you enough that you could actually build a T2 ship. The other route is WH space and WH items to build a T3 cruiser which will actually be EASIER to do what you want all told than T2 anyway.
Good point Eternus8lux8lucis, while I love the idea of syphoning to make some T2 items that does require interaction with other players experienced advantages, however, if it wasnGÇÖt for them I could also put up a POSGǪ IGÇÖll keep this one in mind.
I hadnGÇÖt considered T3 as an option. I love it, finding a WH would be easier (I Hope) than mining moons. I will investigate T3 Manufacturing, Thanks for the input.
Lena Crews wrote: If you are not an Alpha I'd advise you complete all the career missions for all the factions (three sets of agents for each I believe).
This gives you a boatload of ships... some that you might need to train to use... but also I believe 24 ventures which will be useful. Even if you don't train for other racial frigates/destroyers... you can reprocess those ships to give needed materials to make your own stuff. You should also have over 100 million isk... which while you won't be buying a lot should get you some BPO's and skillbooks you'll need.
I had thought about doing the other career missions but never had any intentions to fly their shipsGǪ but for reprocessing. Not a bad idea, gets me some Meg and keeps within my ruleset.
Thanks for the tip.

I am going to try this again, I have an open character slot. End goal? No idea yet. Starting as Amarr to reduce initial ammo cost, but I'm an Omega so all guns are on the table.
You plan on doing this Solo? Did you want to come join the Dystopian Society? We are based in Amarr Highsec. |

Theory Vanniht wrote:So. This character was created on 30th December with a very similar process in mind.
The goal I sey myself is to build and fit an Astero, well it will be 2 Astero's one for exploration and one for hunting.
My rules are very similar to your's, I have to mine all my own materials be that ore, PI, salvage and loot reprocessing and moon materials. I can only buy NPC seeded stuff like skill books and BPO's, I can also buy from LP stores this is mainly to get the blueprint but also sisters probes and some skill books.
I sold everything that I got from the career missions and the PLEX from the buddy invite, so I started my adventure in a Velator with civilian gun, miner and afterburner and approx 1b ISK.
On my way out of the rookie system to my new home I picked up some BPO's for a Venture, Miner I and Hobgoblin I and started mining to build my first Venture. I f anyone cares it take about 47 loads of ore in a Velator to build a Venture and fit it out. Not that I was counting or anything, actually I was, I have detailed notes.
I now have 2 Venture's, 4 frigate's, 2 Destroyer's, 2 Industrial ships and a shuttle to go with my Velator.
NB. It took less then an hour for that first Venture to be destroyed.
Its interesting to see how far you've come in 30 days when you have starting capital. How much have you spent on BPO's so far? |

Quick update,
Thing have been going really well. IGÇÖve had 2 other people join in on the adventure and Uncle Bork running a similar version of rules is running parallel with us.
Still running with the original ships obtained through the career missions but feel like I have finally got them fit out with a semi decent fit. Mostly all T1 manufactures with a few T1 named drops from rats.
With the combined effort of our corporation we now have a significant list of BPOGÇÖs, mostly all modules designed for Armor tanking and lasers.
After a lot of deliberation, we decided that selling only manufactured components to the market wouldnGÇÖt create an impact on the adventure weGÇÖre trying to simulate being in 2003. Still restricting ourselves from selling modules we find in drops at this stage but are discussing its impact it would have on our primary objective.
Love to hear your thoughts on how selling modules found from drops would affect the overall gameplay/objective.

Djsaeu wrote:If you are not putting the modules you get from loot on the market, why not just reprocess them back to the basic materials and then use that.
Just a thought there.
Hey Djsaeu, that is in fact the main way we get alot of the better minerals, Zyd ect. and the ONLY way we can get Megacyte at this stage in the game.
On other news, our experiment is growing, with 4 active members within the corp, a few expressions of interest and another running solo parallel with us its starting to become a small community to which we can support each other and hopefully progress a little faster.
Really does show the importance of working together in EVE. |
